About Climate Smart Business

Climate Smart is a social enterprise that trains businesses and provides them with software tools to track and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. By taking a close look at the energy they consume, the waste they produce, how they move goods and people around, Climate Smart’s client businesses often find ways to reduce their environmental impact while cutting costs or improving operational efficiencies.

With nearly 600 organizations trained and 450,000 tonnes CO2e measured (equivalent to nearly 88,000 cars!) since 2007, Climate Smart's mission is to empower and enable organizations to reduce their emissions, strengthen their businesses, and take action on something they care about.

The mission of B Corporations is a great fit with our goals of helping effect a shift toward a more resilient and sustainable economy. Also, as we’re doing what we do, being part of the B Corp community will help keep us honest in terms of our own internal practices, from GHG emissions, to governance, to HR practices. We are excited to be among the first companies in Canada that are committed to the idea that companies can thrive while also taking a triple-bottom-line approach – addressing their social, environmental and financial impacts.

The Change We Seek®

Climate Smart is about a shift in the way we do businesses, while at the same time rooting this sea change in pragmatism. Cutting carbon is simply a different diagnostic lens for a business. The streamlined program is a streamlined process is a first step towards carbon neutrality, and an excellent tool for quantifying achievements made by existing corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Climate Smart focusses on the business case for sustainability: achieving success with easy first steps and mitigating real costs today will help to drive further endeavours.

Climate Smart also partners with local governments and other organizations to create novel relationships between public bodies and private enterprise. For example, the regional government of Metro Vancouver and several local governments have joined Climate Smart in offering the program to their business communities. The program builds networks amongst governments and local businesses, catalyzing innovation and new business practices. Meanwhile, municipalities are able to engage their local businesses in climate action that will benefit the entire community.

Because Climate Smart teaches (as opposed to doing the work for companies), businesses build up their internal capacity to manage carbon emissions. Through a combination of small-group training sessions, software, and one-on-one coaching, Climate Smart helps businesses help develop green job skills in their staff that will become increasingly relevant in the economy of the future.
