About Hitnet

Hitnet is an innovative Australian ‘Communication for Development’ company that produces rich learning media with and for those living on the wrong side of the digital divide – populations marginalised by culture, technology and distance. Hitnet produces, aggregates, curates and distributes cultural stories and information across their digital platform in ways that empower individuals and families, and strengthen communities and their cultures. Their purpose is to co-create knowledge to transform lives, and they do this by harnessing the best of new technologies to produce culturally appropriate digital stories that empower people to make good life choices.

Hitnet currently has 70 interactive Community Hubs on its national network in Australia, and a virtual online kiosk, delivering culturally appropriate health and social information to Indigenous Australians. Hubs are installed in health centres, schools, youth drop-in centres, and correctional centres. In 2015, there were more than 35,000 purposeful (as opposed to random) uses of the Hitnet Hubs around Australia, with approximately 75% of the users being young people, with an even distribution of male and female.

Hitnet uses creative community production processes to work with people at the grass roots to produce the digital stories that carry key social health messages, using local language, storylines, music and actors. These productions provide real jobs and skill acquisition for communities marginalized by geography, culture and disadvantage.

As a for profit, for purpose company, Hitnet saw an alignment with the B Corp model which is formally recognized on a global platform, as a better way to do business. Therefore, becoming a B Corp will allow Hitnet to join a burgeoning community of like-minded organisations that will challenge the dominant Western business model of maximizing shareholder value. And as a relatively new company, conducting the assessment has given Hitnet further tools for establishing itself as a company that meets best practice in social and environmental performance, and good governance.

Questions in this section will measure whether a company's product or service is designed to solve a social or environmental issue (e.g. improves health, preserves environment or creates economic opportunity to individuals or communities, promotes the arts/sciences, or increases the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises).
