About KYA Design Group

Formerly Kajioka and Yamachi Architects, KYA was established in 1972 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The full service architecture firm expanded from KYA Design Group to include the Sustainability Studio, a think tank and sustainability consultancy, or innovation firm.  KYA Design Group + Sustainability Studio approach every project as an opportunity to add value by designing for social, environmental and financial prosperity in Hawaii.  The architecture firm specializes in planning, green building design, interior design, and project management services with an emphasis on airport, retail and school campuses; the innovation firm specializes in sustainability master planning and programming, sustainable business development, facilitation, community engagement and corporate social responsibility reporting for clients in the public and private sectors.

With the addition of our Sustainability Studio, we felt the time had come to look inward and review our own physical plant and operations to be fully conscious of our own social, financial and environmental impact.  Caring deeply about our impact - as a company and as individuals - is an aspect of our company that we wanted to put to the test through the rigorous B Lab Impact Assessment.

The leaders of KYA have great respect for the special culture and environment that exists in Hawaii and feel strongly that businesses play a large role in perpetuating aloha.  Through the company’s work in the built environment through the Design Group or organizational and stakeholder environment through the Sustainability Studio, KYA seeks to design for social, economic, and financial prosperity in Hawaii.

The Customers section of the Assessment measures the impact a company has on its customers. The section focuses on whether a company sells products or services that promote public benefit, and if those products/services are targeted towards serving underserved populations. Questions in this section will measure whether a company's product or service is designed to solve a social or environmental issue (e.g. improves health, preserves environment or creates economic opportunity to individuals or communities, promotes the arts/sciences, or increases the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises).

The Community section of the survey assesses a company's impact on its community. The Community section evaluates a company's supplier relations, diversity, and involvement in the local community. The section also measures the company's practices and policies around community service and charitable giving. In addition, this section includes if a company's product or service is designed to solve a social issue, including access to basic services, health, education, economic opportunity, arts, and increasing the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises.
