About The Geek Gene

The Geek Gene creates opportunities for geeks to participate in a creative environment producing innovative solutions for communities online and off. Their company started in 2004, when six geeks parted ways with an established Internet company firm that was switching away from software development. They left proprietary platforms behind and move toward Open Source software development. The Geek Gene, LLC is designed to operate as a "company without walls," providing flexible opportunities for geeks to participate in developing cutting-edge software solutions.

The values advanced by B Lab and B Corporations are ones that are important to us and also to our stakeholders. By becoming a B Corporation, we are better able to broadcast our commitment to those values and hopefully set an example of social and environmental responsibility in our community.

The Geek Gene offers a variety of custom services for businesses and organizations including strategic IT planning, solution design and software development, graphic design and web site implementation, internet application development, and interactive community-building tools. We have done everything from custom web development to custom software development and the development of new currency systems to help communities across the country. They take pride in choosing projects which help positively impact their community (or the community where the project is based). And yes, it's true -- they're geeks and proud of it. They've got the geek gene so you don't have to.

The Change We Seek®

At Geek Gene, our community is very important to us.

We founded the Mile High Business Alliance (a BALLE network), financed their startup, and built the tools for their Colorado Local First campaign (www.ColoradoLocalFirst.com) which not only serves as a business directory, but as a community-involved platform for increasing dialogue and accountability. It includes information about environmentally sustainable and socially responsible practices. We also provide free web services and sites for a number of communities and local organizations. (Alliance for Holistic Aging, Civic Canopy, etc.)

Geek Gene is rebuilding the whole timebanks platform in Drupal for all timebanks associated with TimebanksUSA. Will be launching over 100 timebanks on this new Drupal platform and we are working with Timebanks USA to develop a rich collaborative environment for Timebanks around the world.

Geek Gene is building the Civic Network, a social networking site to help the non-profit community. Sponsored by The Piton Foundation and The Civic Canopy, the Civic Network will be used to help people of like-minds find each other, network, share ideas and make change happen. We have enjoyed helping this social change networking site get off the ground and working to help positively enhance our communities.

We have invested about a hundred thousand dollars in our own product development of tools to support communities and we are releasing those as free Open Source tools to benefit the wider community. These tools are a small part of our longer-term goals.
