About Highland Craftsmen

Highland Craftsmen Inc designs, manufactures and sells Bark House® brand architectural elements to building, design and furniture professionals as well as individuals. We are the Original Manufacturer of Poplar Bark Shingles. We utilize a waste product of the logging industry and produce a natural bark shingle as home siding. The manufacturing of this product uses very few resources like water, electricity or fuel. Hand tools and brute human strength are the staples of Bark House® Shingle manufacturing. This is a maintenance free product. It never has to be sealed, stained or painted; therefore chemicals are not added. Bark House Shingles last up to 80 years and when it’s finally time to discard the product, it’s all natural, so it won’t harm the environment.

We became a B Corp because the structure helps us to communicate a strong, verified message about who we are. This certification makes our performance standards transparent so that our clients retain the "Power of Their Purchase™" and can “Invest with Impact™”.

Because Highland Craftsmen dedicates our total attention to the research, manufacturing and sales of Bark House products, we offer first hand product knowledge that you can depend on. We field and laboratory test all of our products and are the only company that monitors historic poplar bark shingled homes. Direct research adds real value that customers benefit from. Our experience, knowledge, environmental sensitivity and dedication to product quality make us the Bark House® Experts. Our mission since inception in 1990 has been to minimize the impact of building and harmonize with nature. We believe in a People-Planet-Profit Triple Bottom Line Business Model. To increase the transparency of this, we create jobs that cannot be outsourced, we are an environmentally beneficial company and we build social equity.

• We are a “green” building company, and proud members of the US Green Building. Through the Arbor Day Foundation, we plant a tree for every job done. HC strives constantly to improve our sustainable, green processes.

• We support social equity. HC is co-owned by a female in a male dominated industry, it is located in a tier one rural community but more importantly the jobs that are create are primarily for individuals in the lowest income bracket. HC pays more for the “waste” bark than the logger gets for the tree itself, increasing individual’s financial gain two fold.

• HC® has one primary manufacturing facility and we have maintained a compact footprint, so as to minimize impact on the surrounding neighborhood. HC strives to integrate into the community by providing Green spaces and landscaping materials to buffer our industrial impact.
