About Savvy Rest

Savvy Rest is a Virginia-based natural mattress and organic bedding manufacturer. The company has ranked in the Inc. 500/5000 roster of America’s fastest-growing companies for three consecutive years. Savvy Rest’s founder, Michael Penny, took an unusual path to business. He lived for 20 years in a yoga ashram, consuming little and owning less. After leaving that community, Penny worked in a mattress store and was struck by two realizations: 1) most people shop for mattresses in a state of tension and mistrust because of traditional selling practices, and 2) most conventional or foam mattresses contain toxic chemicals, particularly flame retardants and pesticides, that threaten both human and environmental health. 

Penny viewed the bedroom as a key retreat from pollutant exposure, and better sleep as essential to health. In 2003, he opened his own mattress store and in 2006, founded Savvy Rest. Penny made a connection with a natural latex supplier from India, who extended him credit on the strength of a handshake and their shared outlook. Penny chose natural latex, organic wool, and organic cotton as materials for Savvy Rest’s signature mattress because they do not expose sleepers to off-gassing chemicals or pesticide residues. The layered design allows very fine-tuned customization for comfort and pain relief. Penny established a sales philosophy focused not on “closing” but on creating authentic relationships with customers and responding to their needs. Savvy Rest has defined its company values as Empathy, Health, Empowerment, and Sustainability. To ensure that benefits will accrue to all employees, in late 2012 Savvy Rest became employee-owned 

Savvy Rest has a network of over 150 independently-owned retail store locations in the U.S., the largest among natural mattress manufacturers. The Savvy Rest brand is also sold in three Canadian cities and in four company-owned Savvy Rest Natural Bedroom stores in Virginia, Maryland, and California. Plans include expansion of the company’s dealer network and additional Savvy Rest Natural Bedroom stores.

The Change We Seek®

When the natural mattress industry was young, Savvy Rest took the lead in posting materials testing results and certifications openly on their website. They found that customers came to Savvy Rest driven by two primary concerns--avoidance of indoor pollution from chemical-saturated conventional mattresses, and a need for personalized comfort that could adapt to their bodies’ needs over time. Organic latex mattresses with replaceable layers meet both these needs.

Savvy Rest products also avoid damage to the environment that most synthetic mattresses cause. Discarded mattresses take up a large amount of space in the nation’s landfills, and take many years to break down. When they do, they release toxins into the air and groundwater. Savvy Rest eases this chemical burden on the environment in several ways.

Because natural latex mattresses last much longer than traditional innerspring or synthetic foam models, fewer are replaced. When Savvy Rest products are discarded, the environment receives plant-based materials containing nearly zero toxic chemicals. Savvy Rest also recycles discarded mattresses that the company’s stores remove when making deliveries, sending them to a plant that recaptures up to 95% of the materials for re-use.

Savvy Rest is people-oriented first, followed by profit and sustainability. Savvy Rest’s founder spent most of his adult life in a yoga community focused on personal development. Though in his early life he’d never been interested in commerce, when he later started a company he discovered that business--when conducted with complete honesty and integrity--can be a wonderful medium for empowering personal development.

This orientation permeates all Savvy Rest departments, from operations to production to business development. Demonstrating that mutually trusting and respectful interaction is a top priority has a profound effect inside and outside the workplace. It affects not only employees, but also suppliers, dealers, and customers. This attitude is present in Savvy Rest’s marketing as well as in internal and external meetings. Visitors often remark how relaxed and focused people are.

Employees are encouraged to develop in ways that suit them and the Savvy Rest community. All stakeholders are encouraged to be true to their word--simply by doing what they say they will do. This is the core of accountability and generates trust and a sense of community. Savvy Rest also became employee-owned in 2012, to share the benefits and responsibilities of ownership more broadly.

The Worker section of the survey assesses the company's relationship with its workforce. This section measures how the company treats its workers through compensation, benefits, training, and ownership opportunities provided to workers. It also focuses on the overall work environment within the company through management/worker communication, job flexibility and corporate culture, and worker health and safety practices.



The Customers section of the Assessment measures the impact a company has on its customers. The section focuses on whether a company sells products or services that promote public benefit, and if those products/services are targeted towards serving underserved populations. Questions in this section will measure whether a company's product or service is designed to solve a social or environmental issue (e.g. improves health, preserves environment or creates economic opportunity to individuals or communities, promotes the arts/sciences, or increases the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises).



The Community section of the survey assesses a company's impact on its community. The Community section evaluates a company's supplier relations, diversity, and involvement in the local community. The section also measures the company's practices and policies around community service and charitable giving. In addition, this section includes if a company's product or service is designed to solve a social issue, including access to basic services, health, education, economic opportunity, arts, and increasing the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises.



The Governance section of the Assessment evaluates a company's accountability and transparency. The section focuses on the company's mission, stakeholder engagement, and overall transparency of the company's practices and policies.
