About The Green Engineer, LLP

The Green Engineer, LLP is a sustainable design consulting firm specializing in energy efficient and sustainable solutions for the built environment. Founded in 2005 by Christopher Schaffner, the firm currently has a staff of eleven, with eight LEED-accredited professionals. We see sustainability as a core goal shared by all design team members and stakeholders.

Why did we decide to become a B Corp? Two reasons. First, it's about walking the talk. In our work we advocate for the third-party certification of the environmental performance of buildings. So it makes sense that we'd seek a third-party to confirm our own performance as a company. Second, it's a way to communicate our mission to our clients. Becoming a B Corp says that we're in for more than just the money. We achieve success as a business when we help our clients move in a positive direction for the environment, regardless of how much money we make.

We practice Integrative Design, a whole system approach, which looks at diverse connections in buildings and explores their inter-relationships. Our practice uses tools such as energy and daylight modeling and life-cycle assessment of materials, to analyze project performance and inform our decision-making. We provide guidance in determining appropriate sustainable design measures for each project. Our firm consists of both Project Managers and Building Performance Analysts, which enable us to manage a LEED project from start to finish. We also consult for non-LEED clients, including affordable housing agencies and other non-profit developers. The Green Engineer, LLP is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, has adopted the Architecture 2030 Challenge, and is an Energy Star partner.

The Change We Seek®

It is The Green Engineer LLP’s purpose to identify and serve the long term-interests of our clients and the planet, in alignment.

We support an office culture that embraces workplace democracy through distributed ownership and open book accounting.

Our firm strives for technical excellence. We want to be the experts in the field.

We believe in practical sustainability. While sustainable building practices should be implemented when possible, they should not be forced into a design when it is impractical to do so. Obtaining LEED points should not drive the building design. We like to focus on what works.

Our firm maintains an open and teaching approach to our work. We keep no proprietary secrets, and freely share our knowledge and experience with our clients and community.

The Green Engineer supports a Triple Bottom Line. We advocate that clients create buildings that are environmentally responsible, provide a healthy environment for people, and are cost-efficient to maintain.

Our objective is not to just to reduce the number of problems with our buildings, but to increase the number of benefits in our buildings.
