Water Power Group

About Water Power Group

Water Power Group is a private power producer working in partnership with local and Aboriginal communities to develop small run-of-river hydroelectric projects in markets across North America, primarily in Ontario, Canada. Water Power Group repurposes flood control dam sites to generate clean hydropower, using highly efficient ‘low-head’ turbine technologies proven to produce reliable waterpower with minimal impacts on rivers and surrounding ecosystems.

We became a B Corp to enhance our organization’s vision of producing clean power and local economic benefits through First Nations and community engagement in renewable waterpower power investment, development and ownership.

Water Power Group’s business model is built on a vision of long-term, sustainable economic performance. Many of the company’s projects receive revenue secured by 40-year power purchase agreements with the Ontario Power Authority under the terms of the province’s Green Energy Act. By including local private, public and co-operative partnerships in its business model, Water Power Group is finding more effective financing, reducing project cost and risk, and ensuring a higher rate of return on its projects. The Change We Seek®

Water Power Group’s envisions a clean energy future that enables everyone to participate in, and benefit from a values-based, renewable energy economy.

In addition to the environmental benefits of producing renewable clean hydropower that can reduce our dependency on fossil fuels such as coal, gas and diesel, the company employs fish-friendly turbines and selects pre-existing dam sites to minimize aquatic and shore disruption and limit impacts on recreational and cultural activities such as fishing and kayaking.

Water Power Group is committed to a fair environmental assessment process that places consultation and open public engagement at the forefront of the process. The company prioritizes local sourcing and employment, and further enables small-market economic development by inviting local citizens, community groups, co-ops and First Nations to invest in projects through local equity share-offerings. Community investment has proven to keep project revenues circling within local host communities, in this case often small townships and municipalities where benefits can touch everyone in the region.

Water Power Group seeks to maximize the ecological, social and economic benefits of waterpower development through industry leadership in technology, site development and community engagement. The company is committed to using pre-existing flood control dam sites and new turbine technologies to effectively harness the power of water to create clean power with minimal ecological impact. Through the early engagement of communities local to its projects, the company seeks to enable local citizens and First Nations to participate in, and benefit financially from, the development of waterpower sites that provide secure, green power and profits to their communities.
