About White Dog Café
White Dog Café is a restaurant which features ingredients purchased from local farms, and events which educate our clientele and staff. We also operate a gift store, Black Cat, which features local and fair trade products and books.
We became a B Corporation to preserve our social mission even after our founder retires. We also joined the community of B Corporations to support the growing concept of using business to create social benefit.
We constantly pursue ways that we can improve our community and make a significant impact in the city of Philadelphia and beyond. We believe that we can use the power of business for good and are actively involved in several community efforts to campaign for positive social change. The White Dog Café is not just a restaurant; it is a place where ideas are grown and like-minded individuals can share their thoughts on the issues facing our world today.
The Change We Seek™
White Dog Café seeks to fully serve in four areas: serving customers, employees, community and nature. Also, we seek to encourage other companies to do so by being a good model and teaching others our practices.
• Our commitment to creating a positive impact in our society starts with reducing our environmental impact. The White Dog Café and The Black Cat purchase 100% of our electricity from wind power – the first business in Pennsylvania to do so. Switching 360,000 kilowatts per year to wind power eliminates the emission of approximately 432,000 lbs. of CO2, a greenhouse gas. We essentially take 31 cars off the road or plant 30,000 trees per year thanks to our wind energy. Furthermore, we installed a solar hot water system with a tankless booster. By substituting renewable sources for our two largest utilities, we have dramatically reduced our environmental footprint.
• We actively work in the neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Our non-profit arm, White Dog Café Foundation, receives a donation of 20% of our profits each year, which helps fund projects around the city. We sponsor our staff and customers to volunteer in community efforts already underway to make White Dog Café a hub for community activity.
