B the Change: B Lab and B Corps volunteer at MANNA
The week of June 16th, B Corps all over the country are coming together to B the Change in their communities by organizing volunteering events for their employees and friends. B Lab didn’t want to be left out of the fun, so on Monday, B Labbers and employees of Philadelphia B Corp Kregel & Company CPA spent the afternoon in the kitchens at MANNA, the Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance.
MANNA was founded in 1990 in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Members brought one hot meal a day to those fighting HIV, both to keep their bodies nourished and to combat the isolation and stigma that came with a poorly-understood and widely-feared disease. Today, MANNA brings free meals to people all over Southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey who are battling life-threatening illnesses. These meals, many of which are designed to meet the nutritional needs of their recipients, are largely prepared by over 2500 volunteers who work in MANNA’s kitchens every year. On Monday, B Labbers and B Corp employees strapped on aprons, gloves, and hairnets and got to work!
At the end of the afternoon, the B the Change volunteers had:
• Assembled 624 Chicken Cacciatore meals,
• Packaged 252 cakes,
• Diced 150 pounds of potatoes,
• Chopped 100 pounds of celery, and
• Prepared 525 chicken sandwiches!
All of the food will all be delivered by MANNA to people in the Philadelphia area free of charge.
Thank you to MANNA for all the amazing work they do, and for welcoming us to their kitchens on Monday. We’ll be back soon! If you’re in the Philadelphia area and interested in volunteering for MANNA, check out their website. And check back soon to hear about more events held by the B Corp community during this week of community service!
