Meet the 2014 Best for the World Honorees!
Every year, B Lab shines a light on the members of the B Corp Community who go above and beyond in their pursuit of positive impact. B Corps are certified through taking the B Impact Assessment; a company has to have a verified score of 80 or above in order to become a Certified B Corporation. This means that all B Corps are exceptional performers when it comes to their impact on the environment, their workers, and their communities; they also all meet the highest standards of accountability and transparency. Our “Best for the World” list, however, honors the companies that score in the top 10% of B Corporations, with categories broken down by size. If B Corporations are the best (and we think they are), than this list honors the best of the best. Want to know more about how the honorees are chosen? Check out our criteria.
So who’s at the head of the class? This year there were 92 overall honorees: 56 micro-enterprises (companies with 0-9 employees), 26 small businesses (10-49 employees), and 10 midsize businesses (50 employees or more). The majority are service companies, but there’s plenty of diversity: honorees come from 31 different industries. While financial and sustainability consulting firms have the most representation, other winners are in the business of everything from furniture to farmers’ markets.
This year’s winners also came from all over the globe. About 25% of the B Corporation community is from outside the USA, so it’s no surprise that 30% of Best for the World honorees were from our international community. In fact, 13% of winners were from emerging markets, including countries like Afghanistan, Nicaragua, Kenya, and Colombia. Our Canadian community, as always, had a strong showing, with 12 different companies making the list.
With an ever-growing community of B Corps (nearly 1000!), it makes sense that over a quarter of our honorees are companies that joined us within the past year. However, getting certified isn’t the end of the story for B Corps! 15% of honorees are companies that made the Best for the World list for the first time in 2014, but have been certified for several years! These companies have not been content to merely make the 80-point bar; instead, they’ve worked to increase their score over the years, engaging in a “race to the top.” We’re proud to see that our assessment is not just a way to recognize those companies that are already doing good, but a tool to help triple-bottom-line businesses continually innovate and improve. We can’t wait to see who makes the list next year!
