About Bodhi Surf + Yoga

Bodhi Surf + Yoga is a surf and yoga camp located in Bahia Ballena, Osa, Costa Rica — a small, still relatively untouched community on the Southern Pacific Zone of the country. It is located at the footsteps of the Marino Ballena National Park, a place where the jungle, ocean, and mountains meet; a unique backdrop for a place to immerse yourself in nature, recharge, become energized, and “awaken your inner surfer”.

The word “Bodhi” is Sanskrit for “awareness”, a concept that is central to the activities/lifestyles of surfing and yoga, and an attitude that Bodhi Surf + Yoga disseminates unto those it comes into contact with — students, guests, fellow community members, and businesses alike. As a tourism-based business, Bodhi Surf + Yoga strives to provide its guests with holistic and unique travel experiences that promote responsible tourism, facilitate community engagement, and encourage individuals to see the world (and their role in it!) with fresh eyes. As a surf and yoga camp, Bodhi Surf + Yoga provides its guests with fun, challenging experiences that teach them the necessary skills that will allow them to go forth and continue practicing these activities independently.

As a follower and supporter of the neuro-conservation movement, Bodhi Surf + Yoga utilizes surfing and yoga as a way to facilitate unforgettable learning experiences in nature with the intention of bolstering individual long-term action. Moreover, Bodhi Surf + Yoga members transmit their experience and observations about the environment and use their business and home community as a case study to demonstrate how individuals, taking small steps, can affect meaningful change and inspire others to do the same.

Becoming a B Corps Company is the culmination of the development of Bodhi Surf + Yoga, whereby we have built a company that is not just our way of life and our livelihood, but also a tool to raise awareness about the importance of taking action in light of the issues (particularly the environmental issues) that we face as a global community. Being officially certified, we now look forward to having a rigorous set of standards that will continue to drive our business forward as an agent of change at the grassroots level, and serve as an example that inspires others — individuals and businesses alike — to be conscientious of their own impact.

The Change We Seek®

Bodhi Surf + Yoga’s official mission statement is to “provide memorable travel experiences that facilitate learning through exposure to the people and environment of the place we call home”.

As a coastal tourism business, Bodhi Surf + Yoga depends directly on the wellbeing of its community and global environments, and therefore seeks to find and incorporate new ways to constantly improve those environments — by reducing personal impact, getting involved in projects outside the scope of business operations, and disseminating information to others.

This desire is manifested into action via the Ocean Guardian Journey, a set of corporate responsibility initiatives which include: daily impact reduction measures in business operations; a surf and yoga instruction methodology that integrates environmental awareness; Bodhi Surf + Yoga’s Travelers’ Philanthropy Program; ongoing community projects of Service & Surf Saturdays and Yoga for the Community; the annual Ocean Guardian Contest; the Ocean Guardian Pledge and Ocean Guardian Digest — among other actions. Bodhi Surf + Yoga is always seeking ways to grow and improve, because after all, this is a journey: an opportunity to teach and also to learn.
