About Elephants Delicatessen

Elephants Delicatessen has been committed to providing Portlanders with great local foods from scratch for over three decades. A pioneer in the specialty and gourmet foods industry, they serve a wide variety of customers through eight retail stores and their catering and sack/box lunch delivery service.

We have been committed to using business for good since 1979. The B Corp certification recognizes our achievements in sustainable practices, establishes a new baseline for further pursuit of our mission and practices, and brings us into a select community of like-minded, progressive businesses around the world.

The Change We Seek®

Elephants mission is to provide a fun, friendly, energetic, sensory food experience with exceptional quality and service. As their operation grows, so does their impact on their community. With this in mind, the Elephants herd utilizes the triple bottom line, where people, planet, and profit are their measurement for success. At all levels of their business, they work to demonstrate and share this commitment with their employees and their customers--and to seek sustainable approaches to food service to work towards a better future.

Elephants Delicatessen has long been recognized as a champion of sustainable practices that reduce waste, conserve energy, and support other local businesses. They ”walk the talk” by investing in products that further this effort, including renewable energy sources, responsible waste management practices, and sustainable transit solutions.

The not-so-secret ingredient to Elephants Delicatessen's success is the people. Elephants supports their employees with a full range of benefits that includes medical and dental care, alternative care, vacation, profit sharing, mass transit and educational subsidies, training and opportunities for advancement, flexible schedules, and the opportunity to provide feedback in an open, supportive work culture where everyone can make an impact and be heard.

The Elephants Delicatessen community stretches beyond their employees to include a larger network of vendors, which includes local and sustainably-minded artisans and other partners. It also includes the Portland, Oregon community whose loyalty has helped make Elephants Delicatessen an integral part of the Portland food community. Elephants dedication to the Portland community involves giving back, both through volunteerism and donations. Their staff are involved with many local organizations (including paid, companywide volunteer efforts), and Elephants Delicatessen donates to non-profits and community events throughout the year. Elephants employees volunteer in community projects every year (for which they are paid) and donate food and services to a variety of organizations. And every Elephants retail location (and their catering division) donates all unsold food to a variety of organizations like REACH Community Development, Blanchet House, Rose Haven, Urban Gleaners and Bradley Angle House at the end of every day.

What’s Next? Every day the Elephants Herd is brainstorming new ways to bring their Portland community better and more conscientious services with a lower impact.
