About Oaklandish

After years of public art, the Oaklandish brand of apparel was introduced to help support our ongoing calendar of free public events and the Oaklandish Innovators grant program. The civic pride merchandise is meant to spread "Local Love" while promoting awareness of our mission at large. Oaklandish is committed to encouraging the continuation of Oakland's "trailblazers' legacy," where trends are created and boundaries are redefined. 2015 marks the eighth year of annual grants given to organizations that are doing pioneering work in our community. These funds are meant to offer recognition and support of programs that exemplify the values of innovation and progress in all areas of civic life, including arts, education, technology, and business.

In 2014, Oaklandish opened Oakland Supply Co. which showcases the finest local wares from Oakland, California, as well as a selection of premium American-made goods. In 2015, Oaklandish launched NSEWest Co., a lifestyle apparel brand dedicated to celebrating and supporting the communities in which we live, love, work and play.

Our t-shirts might be the most visible aspect of Oaklandish, but our community work is an equally important part of what we do. It’s our way of giving back to the city that gives so much to the world, and it informs every decision we make. That’s why we became a B Corp.

Too many media outlets focus on the negative aspects of Oakland, while overlooking everything that makes this city legendary: its contributions to art, music, social justice and trailblazing style. Oaklandish works to spread the word about what’s good in Oakland, with gear that celebrates the cultural legacy of our city while giving back to organizations doing good in our neighborhoods.

The Customers section of the Assessment measures the impact a company has on its customers. The section focuses on whether a company sells products or services that promote public benefit, and if those products/services are targeted towards serving underserved populations. Questions in this section will measure whether a company's product or service is designed to solve a social or environmental issue (e.g. improves health, preserves environment or creates economic opportunity to individuals or communities, promotes the arts/sciences, or increases the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises).

The section also measures the company's practices and policies around community service and charitable giving.
