About West Arete

West Arete works closely with clients to build custom software solutions such as web applications, mobile applications, and internal workflow applications. Its team of around a dozen employees is headquartered in State College, PA.

Founded in 2005, it has been a member of 1% for the Planet since day one, and a Silver-level Bike Friendly Business. West Arete works extensively in the community to mentor new companies, teach programming, speak to classes, and host events for entrepreneurs and curious technologists.

The company is also known for its policy of giving every employee a fully-paid one month sabbatical, every year. This maximizes the team’s drive and creativity, and streamlines their processes. Search for Scott Woods’ TEDx talk online for inspiration.

We were already doing many good things for our people, community, and environment. B Corp certification commits us to doing these things more thoroughly, and with more permanence. By doing so, we’ve clarified our purpose as an organization, and connected to like-minded businesses and individuals through the B Corp community.

The Change We Seek®

As a software development company, West Arete sees the impact that good software can have on good organizations -- it multiplies their success. West Arete seeks to create the best possible software for nonprofits, educational institutions, and fellow B Corporations, so they have every advantage for accomplishing their missions.

At the same time, the software development field continues to grow at a staggering pace. West Arete seeks to teach, mentor, and grow with the people who possess the talent and ambition to move the industry forward, and who share the joy of crafting elegant, useful software.

Finally, if the business world wants people to apply all of their energy, talents, and skills to solving company problems, then businesses will have to provide the intrinsic motivation to do so. West Arete seeks to do so by caring about them as people, taking care of them and their loved ones, providing ample opportunity for professional growth, and providing them with balance and purpose to their work.

What makes us a better company?
