NYC B Corps Fight Hunger in Westchester County

This post is part of a series covering the B the Change in Our Communities events held by B Corporations in June, and was written by Stefanie Hindmarch, intern at Greyston Bakery.

On June 20th, over 50 volunteers from 12 New York Tri-State B Corps came together to B the Change and give back to the Food Bank for Westchester.  After some impressive transportation coordination, we met at the Food Bank’s warehouse in Elmsford, NY where we learned more about this great organization and worked together to pack over 2,900 pounds of pasta, providing at least 2,000 meals for our hungry neighbors.

The Food Bank for Westchester, a not-for-profit established in 1988, serves the estimated 200,000 Westchester residents who do not have enough to eat, many of whom are children. The Food Bank acquires, packs, and distributes food for over 265 hunger-relief programs across the county, including soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, group homes, treatment centers, and low-income daycare centers. The organization also operates a BackPack Program and a Kids Café to ensure that food-insecure children and their families have access to nutritious meals.

After spending a few hours elbow deep in pasta, we carpooled our way to B Corp Greyston Bakery for a delicious BBQ (and plenty of brownies and cookies, of course!). After lunch, Greyston provided its fellow B’s with a behind the scenes tour of the Bakery. Volunteers learned all about their Open Hiring Policy, which gives individuals employment opportunities regardless of education, work history, or past social barriers.

Many thanks to our friends from Armonia, Carnegie Fabrics, Charter School Business Management, Closed Loop Advisors, Down to Earth Markets, Etsy, Full Circle Home, Hilary’s Eat Well, Susty Party, sweetriot, UncommonGoods, and B Lab for joining the Greyston Bakery team for a cheerful day of volunteering and learning. We would also like to say thanks to Peeled Snacks; though they could not be there, they generously donated some delicious dried mango to our enthusiastic volunteers. We hope to see you all at other B Corp events very soon!
