Announcing B Lab Colorado!
B Lab is thrilled to announce the opening of B Lab Colorado, a new office of B Lab in Boulder dedicated to serving and growing the community of Colorado B Corps. As anyone who attended our 2013 Champions Retreat in Boulder can attest, our Colorado community is large, passionate, and full of remarkable organizations. Now, with an official B Lab presence in Boulder (and soon to expand to other Colorado cities), B Lab will be able to even better support the great work being done by B Corps in the Centennial State!
Heading up B Lab Colorado will be none other than Kim Coupounas (pictured third from left above), co-founder of Boulder-based outdoor manufacturer and retailer GoLite. Coupounas served as GoLite’s CEO and more recently as its Chief Sustainability Officer over the past 15 years. She has also served as Chairman of the Board of the Outdoor Industry Association, the trade association representing the $646 billion active, outdoor recreation industry. She is a frequent public speaker on entrepreneurship, leadership, and sustainability, and is a vocal champion of responsible business practice. Kim and GoLite have been all-star members of the B Community since GoLite’s certification in 2008, including recent involvement in both the 2013 Champions Retreat and the B the Change campaign.
“Kim is a highly credible entrepreneur and leader who brings broad and deep business experience with special expertise in empowering diverse communities to achieve common objectives,” said Andrew Kassoy, B Lab co-founder and Boulder native. “It’s hard to imagine a leader more suited to this role.”
Perhaps no one is more excited about Kim’s appointment than Kim herself. "I am absolutely thrilled and honored to be helping build the community of Certified B Corps and responsible businesses in my beautiful home state,” she said when asked about her new role with B Lab. “Colorado is already among the nation’s hotspots for entrepreneurship, innovation and social enterprise, and we have an extremely engaged and passionate community of leaders throughout the state already using business as a force for good, including over thirty Certified B Corporations. We are off to a great start! To have the opportunity to lead a full-time team who will work with the full spectrum of Colorado stakeholders to galvanize and accelerate this base while raising broader awareness about the B Corp movement and how to do business in a better way is a dream come true for me personally."
It's a dream come true for B Lab to welcome Kim and Colorado to the ever-growing B Lab family! For now, B Lab Colorado will be housed at Impact Hub Boulder, which is itself a Certified B Corporation. A Denver office is expected within the year. One event to look forward to in Colorado in 2014 is the first effective date of Colorado benefit corporation legislation on April 1. To help answer the community’s questions on this new corporate form, B Lab hosted two workshops on benefit corporations in Boulder and Denver this week with the help of Seth Henry of B Corp Blue Dot Advocates (pictured below) and our friends at Davis Graham & Stubbs. Both workshops had packed houses—at this rate, Colorado may break Oregon’s record for the state with the most sign-ups on Day 1 of benefit corporation law!
We can't wait to see what B Lab and the Colorado B Corp community can accomplish together!
