About New Living

New Living is a green building and home store committed to providing healthy, safe, clean spaces that are affordable. On the green building side, they sell locally made products, non-toxic paint, sustainable flooring, carpet, and countertops, and custom cabinets to home owners and professionals. On the green home side, you can find organic mattresses and bedding, non-toxic cleaning supplies, and baby products, to name just a few.

New Living is more than just a store. The idea behind what they are doing is to make the green building and green living movement accessible and affordable for everyone. They want New Living to be a community store that encourages new thinking, ideas, and helps foster a local green economy.

The values advanced by B Lab and B Corporations are ones that are important to us and also to our stakeholders. By becoming a B Corporation, we are better able to broadcast our commitment to those values and hopefully set an example of social and environmental responsibility in our community.

The Change We Seek®

New Living has an extensive product selection process. "Green" has many definitions and they know that more and more people are becoming conscious consumers and shopping with their values. They do not judge their customers, but they do judge their suppliers. We only work with companies that are transparent about their social, environmental, and economic impact.

It can be very hard for consumers to sort through all of the information coming out of the "green rush" and they attempt to do a lot of that sorting for the everyday consumer and present information in an easily accessible format. To do this, they partnered with a non-profit organization called Build Clean to create a vendor survey that all companies must complete to enter into their approval process. The survey is comprised of questions about their environmental and labor standards, potential health benefits to their products, and the ethics of the company itself.

This section measures how the company treats its workers through compensation, benefits, training, and ownership opportunities provided to workers. It also focuses on the overall work environment within the company through management/worker communication, job flexibility and corporate culture, and worker health and safety practices.

Customers

The Customers section of the Assessment measures the impact a company has on its customers. The section focuses on whether a company sells products or services that promote public benefit, and if those products/services are targeted towards serving underserved populations. Questions in this section will measure whether a company's product or service is designed to solve a social or environmental issue (e.g. improves health, preserves environment or creates economic opportunity to individuals or communities, promotes the arts/sciences, or increases the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises).

The Community section of the survey assesses a company's impact on its community. The Community section evaluates a company's supplier relations, diversity, and involvement in the local community. The section also measures the company's practices and policies around community service and charitable giving. In addition, this section includes if a company's product or service is designed to solve a social issue, including access to basic services, health, education, economic opportunity, arts, and increasing the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises.
