The Change We Seek®

Ben & Jerry’s overall mission is to make the best product they can, be economically sustainable, and at the same time, create positive social change – specifically to advance new models of economic justice that are both sustainable and replicable.

Within the company Ben & Jerry’s implements things like the ‘Ben & Jerry’s Joy Gang’, a group of employees whose mission is to ‘infuse joy into everything they do’. This includes organizing company wide competitions and theme days, and providing comfort items like a hot cocoa machine for the freezer crew. Their ice cream production model also represents the company’s intention to create positive change. They use locally sourced dairy, cage free eggs, fairly traded products and brownies from fellow Certified B Corp, Greyston Bakery (see ad above). For the environment, Ben & Jerry’s stores their ice cream in environmentally friendly freezers, sources the paper for their pints from a responsible supplier, feeds their ice cream waste to some happy pigs, and has created a ‘Lick Global Warming’ campaign to help fight climate change. Contributions made via the employee-led Ben & Jerry’s Foundation in 2010 totaled over $1.8 million.

Ben & Jerry’s has a progressive, nonpartisan Social Mission that seeks to meet human needs and eliminate injustices in our local, national and international communities. They have long supported nonviolent initiatives that seek to achieve peace. In all of their dealings, they are guided by a mission statement which makes the community’s quality of life integral to and inseparable from our product and financial goals.
